Business Logo:
Before I got to designing my own logo, I had a look at other existing logos so that I could get an idea on how I should design mine. Looking at these logos, most of them are just redesigns of the company logo to make it look more interesting and appealing; the ‘compass’ logo on the right, for example, is very simple yet effective- it is what you would call a wordmark logo or logotypes. Wordmark logos are simple representations of the brand name and are usually accompanied by subtle unique features. The sans serif font is pleasing to look at and the ‘o’ is the logo’s brandmark and is made to look like a compass.
Other logos take a more artistic approach, with full illustrations partnered with their company name, and sometimes their slogan if they have one. Doing this sets the logo out from others and makes it more recognizable and memorable.
The cranky Rooster logo could be categorised as a logo lockup, as it combines different types of logo designs to create one. It has a symbol for the brand (the rooster), the brand name, and the product name all in one design. The brand name contrasts from the rest of the design, this way it’s the first thing that draws people's attention and is the first thing they know about the brand. The serif font gives the logo a traditional and established look.
As much as I would have liked to have made my logo artistic like the ‘cranky rooster’ logo on the right, I had to be mindful of my own limits and what I am capable of doing. With the first logo I designed, I didn’t really have a solid idea in my head of what it would actually look like, so I was just winging it throughout the entire process. I couldn’t find a font that I liked, so I just carefully drew the font I wanted instead- any wobbly lines and such didn’t really matter as this was only a draft, and I ended up not picking it as my logo regardless. I tried to do something creative involving a drawing of a camera but no matter how I drew it, I just couldn’t get it down in a way that satisfied me, which I think ultimately made me not pick this logo (as well as the ‘photography’ text not being that easy to read).
For my next logo idea, I had decided to try something more sophisticated and professional, and easier to read; and thus landed on my final design for my logo. I went with a wordmark logo and made it in Photoshop. I used two different fonts- one serif font and the other sans serif- and a line to separate the words, as well as made them different sizes so that they’d be able to fit into a box together, as seen in the screenshot on the right. I used a double border, one thicker than the other, to make the design look a little more interesting than it would if it were just one border. I used the rectangle tool in Photoshop to make both borders, and changed the shape properties so that they were a different width. I made an alternative where instead of the logo being in a rectangle, it was in a circle, and that I could add illustrations and stuff in the circle around it like I had seen other logos do. Alas, I scrapped this idea and stuck with the rectangle logo, which ended up being my final logo design. The serif font gives my logo a professional look I was hoping for and it doesn’t clash with the sans serif text beneath it and they stand out from each other.
Business Logo Feedback:
I created a google form where I asked a few questions to obtain feedback on my logo and business card design. The first question I asked was what the form fillers thought of my logo design, to which one answered "It's very simple and clear, it gets the point across without any patterns needed". Others expressed similar thoughts and said they liked it. The next question I asked was if they thought anything could be improved, and if so, how. Most suggested that it was slightly dull and could use some more colour or design, but overall it's good.
Now that I have obtained feedback on my design, I can reflect on it and what I could do better in the future when redesigning it. It is important to me that my design is simple enough that it can be understood, but interesting enough that it isn't bland or boring to look at.
